Our favourite dog-friendly beaches in Cornwall
You don’t have to travel far to find a fantastic choice of beaches where your furry friend will be able to run free, frolick in the waves and gaze at the sea.
Treyarnon Bay, at Ocean Blue
You can’t miss this beach when staying at Ocean Blue, as it greets you each time you look out the window (if you’re in a sea-facing apartment). You can’t miss it each time you walk out the front door. Your dog will love the natural pool that forms on the shores here at low tide. And at this time of year, they won’t be competing for space with any humans!
Trebarwith Strand, Tintagel
A tiny beach near the historic village and castle ruins of Tintagel, Trebarwith is surrounded by cliffs and caves. In occasional Autumn and Winter storms, it puts on an impressive display of spray and power. Sit at a table in the Port William pub, just minutes from the beach, and watch the waves crashing in.
Crantock Beach, Newquay
One of the largest beaches in Cornwall at low tide, Crantock sits at the mouth of the Gannel estuary on the North coast. Explore the sand dunes before climbing the coast path (accessible at low tide) to the dog-friendly Lewinnick Lodge Bar at Pentire Point. Here you can enjoy a warming drink in front of the open fire, with panoramic views of the sea.
Pedn Vounder, Porthcurno
You’ll instantly recognise the white sands and turquoise waters of this, one of Cornwall’s most famous beaches. It featured extensively in the latest series of Poldark on BBC1. Dogs are often seen racing along the shores, splashing in the waves and digging in the sand. Quick word of warning… it’s an unofficial naturist beach so be prepared – ahem. Your dog might not be the only one wearing their birthday suit…
Harlyn Bay, Padstow
Just a short walk from your apartment at Ocean Blue, Harlyn Bay is a beautiful beach popular with walkers out of main season. It’s a large and spacious expanse of sand, peppered with rockpools and backed by sand dunes. Your four-legged friend will love exploring here.
Our favourite dog-friendly pubs in Cornwall
After all that fresh air, your dog will be in serious need of a nap. While they dream of swimming in the sea, playing with other dogs and catching frisbees on the sand, you can relax over a drink and something to eat. Here are some of the best places in Cornwall where you can dine out with your four-legged friend at your side.
Jamaica Inn, Bodmin Moor
Made famous by Daphne Du Maurier’s novel of the same name, this pub is full of mystery, legend and history. Sitting in a desolate spot in the heart of Bodmin Moor, expect slate floors, low beamed ceilings and warming home-cooked food. Ghosts are also a possibility, but they’re more for your dog than you.
The Cornish Arms, Padstow
Owned by celebrity chef, Rick Stein, this pub specialises in delicious freshly prepared seafood, caught locally in Padstow. It also serves good old fashioned pub food to keep the whole family happy. It welcomes dogs all year round, and is famed for its friendly staff and relaxed atmosphere.
Popular with surfers, this little hide-out is tucked away just off the sands of Polzeath Beach in North Cornwall. You and your dog will love the squishy sofas, comfy beanbags, and cool furnishings, combined with tasty snacks and rich coffee.
The Old Ship, Padstow
You won’t get closer to the harbour in Padstow than this historic Grade II listed building, which sits right on the front of the quay. Take in impressive views of the fishing boats and changing tides, while watching the world go by. As you’d expect, it specialises in serving fish, freshly landed in Padstow Harbour.
Pandora Inn, Mylor near Falmouth
Travel from the North coast to the South coast to discover this 13th Century inn on the south coast near Falmouth. You’ll love the spectacular views of Restronguet Creek and the seasonal produce while your dog will love the roaring log fire and the nearby walks.
